  10. <p>The base was established as Shemya Army Air Base in 1943 and served as a bomber base during World War II. It was operated by Alaskan Air Command until August 1990 when PACAF absorbed all AAC assets. Eareckson housed a cryptological unit for the Security Service from 1956 until 1975, and ADC's Cobra Dane radar from the spring of 1976. Det 1 6th Wing (formerly 6th SRW) was established to operate the Eielson-based RC-135s which frequently terminate missions at Shemya (the island on which Eareckson is situated). The base is known as 'The Rock' as it is only 11 square miles in area. The Aleutian chain has the international dateline bent around it so that the date is the same as the remainder of the USA. The base was renamed Eareckson AFS during the early 1990s.
